An idle idol

I finished up this Pterro-Sphinx by Forge of Ice Miniatures. It's sold in the UK by Fenris Games. It's a nice two part resin piece that really takes weathering well.

I wanted to play around with some of the new Games Workshop paints, so base coated the statue in Runelord Brass. I then washed it in Cryptek Armourshade Gloss. While I quite like how this turned out in the smaller recesses, I didn't really like how it looked in some of the larger areas. I then gave it a drybrush of Canoptek Alloy. It was a bit too silvery for my liking. I think if I was doing it again I'd have used this as a super light finishing drybrush over a colour that was more bronze. I then mucked about with Nihilak Oxide to add weathering and cover up the bits I found too glossy.

For the plinth, I based in Lupercal Green, followed by a drybrush of Sons of Horus Green. I then muddied it up with plenty of Typhus Corrosion, which is one of my favourite things. I then felt that there wasn't enough dark to light contrast on the plinth so added an extra drybrush of Hellion Green to the relief and some of the corners which made me a lot happier with it.

I hope you like it. Do take the time to check out Fenris' store and maybe pick something up. They've just finished a big business move, which has not been great given all the World Situation as well. They're back up and casting now, catching up with orders, so now's a great time to show support and pick up a few things you fancy.

Friday Feelings - Infinity

With the new edition of Infinity in pre-order at the moment, I'm taking a bit of a moment to look forward to my future Infinity plans.

I've loved everything Corvus Belli have said about the upcoming edition, and I'm impatient to see how it actually plays.

I'm currently working on painting up my Shasvastii. They'll be my first Infinity force I've painted myself rather than using a commission painter. I'm really stoked to see what they'll look like on the table.

Obviously, with all the Nonsense going on in the world, I've not been out much. I don't know when I'll be able to next make it down to the club to play in person. In the meantime, I'll be keeping on playing games in Tabletop Simulator so I don't forget how to play!

I've still got a whole bunch of Shasvastii who are going to need painting, so they're my top priority right now on the Infinity front.

I'm holding off on my Nomads for now as they've teased a revamp of Corregidor, and I'm expecting a new support pack and remotes box. I also want to do a whole bunch of test schemes to work out exactly how I'm going to paint them before I start putting paint on my actual Infinity figures...

Meanwhile, in the land of side projects, I have my O-12 lined up to paint - I've got the original Wildfire set, plus Starmada will be along soon enough.

I'm also super keen to get into White Company, a new mercenary faction that's been announced for the new edition. Looking at the model list, I already have an awful lot of the models you need for it. On the other hand, the colour scheme involves a lot of white, which isn't currently my strong suit. I may come to regret that...

Work in Progress Wednesday - Heresy Miniatures Inspectors

Continuing through the various minis I've got prepped and ready for painting, these are some Inspectors by Heresy Miniatures.

If you followed the link or know the Heresy range, you'll notice that there's only four of the five here. I have no idea why, either. I've since ordered the missing one and got him off to be assembled in the meantime.

I'm planning on using these models to test a super quick blue and gold scheme for my O-12. I reckon they'll look really good in it!

If you can, please do pop over to the Heresy Miniatures site and see if anything takes your fancy. The world is still in quite a state and the small businesses will appreciate whatever help you can send their way.

A sneaky mini painted

I'm pleased to report I managed to finish painting another mini today, in the form of a Shrouded for my Shasvastii. I'm now down to only two Shasvastii models left to finish from the original Wildfire box, and it's feeling like there's real progress.

I've been playing Shasvastii in a narrative campaign on Tabletop Simulator, and they've been excellent. There's also indications that the "Automedikit" equipment they carry, which is rather mediocre in the current edition, is going to get really rather good in N4.

It's been a good week, all told. I also kicked off playing an online D&D game, playing a Kenku Paladin for the Descent into Avernus campaign. I got to play with a bunch of old friends I've not seen in forever and it was good to catch up with them all.

I'm also clearing out a few bits and bobs of things I'm not using on eBay, so feel free to check them out.

There seems to be a lot going on right now, but I'll leave it there for now. Take care!

Work in Progress Wednesday - Fenris Games Plague Cult

When I saw this Plague Cult by Fenris Games, I knew I had to pick them up.

I mean, it's all been a Bit Much this year, but I kind of wanted to make a tribute to all the nonsense and they were a good pick. Fenris have a huge range of different bits and bobs as they produce their own miniatures and scenery and are also a UK importer of some hard to find US ranges.

An old mini painted

I managed to finally finish painting up this old Pit Fighter model I've had stuck on my painting desk since June. He was meant to be a quick win model in between other projects, but I underestimated quite how much fiddly detail he had, and I ended up stalling out a little.

Still, I feel like I'm getting back into the habit of painting regularly, and hopefully I'll be able to keep the momentum up.

In the meantime, I've also managed to prep a whole bunch of minis. In many cases, these were models I'd had commission painters or club mates assemble for me that I needed to do some basing and zenithal on to get ready for painting.

My frustration at not getting much painted has resulted both in me picking up some models to cheer myself up and farming out more assembly, which means I've got way more "work in progress" than I should have, so I'm going to focus a bit on getting a bunch of that under control over the next few weeks.

I'll also throw up a few pictures of some of my upcoming projects over the next few weeks so you can see some of the cool stuff I've found. Hopefully it will make up for the period of radio silence and rambling posts without any new models!

A Lazy Combat Patrol Hack

I'm still not going out yet because I think everything is down to risk management and I'm not risking my life to play toy soldiers.

I've also not yet got a copy of the new Warhammer 40,000 because I have no interest in either a subscription app or a dead tree copy, and for some reason Games Workshop haven't released the e-book copy yet for civilised people.

But that doesn't stop me reading internet sites and writing an elegant and balanced game mod for Combat Patrol games to give the Inquisition a bit more flexibility.

Inquisitorial Clash
  • Select a force using the Patrol Detachment as usual for a Combat Patrol game. Your Warlord must be an Inquisitor.
  • Units with the SISTERS OF SILENCE Faction keyword can be included in a INQUISITION detachment, without preventing that detachment from being an INQUISITION detachment. Note that this does not prevent INQUISITION models in that detachment from gaining any detachment abilities, however SISTERS OF SILENCE units cannot themselves gain any detachment abilities. Similarly, those SISTERS OF SILENCE units are ignored for any rules that state all units from that Detachment must have at least one Faction keyword in common (e.g. in a matched play game) and when documenting your army's Faction.
  • Units with the ASTRA MILITARUM Faction keyword can be included in a INQUISITION detachment, without preventing that detachment from being an INQUISITION detachment. Note that this does not prevent INQUISITION models in that detachment from gaining any detachment abilities, however ASTRA MILITARUM units cannot themselves gain any detachment abilities. Similarly, those ASTRA MILITARUM units are ignored for any rules that state all units from that Detachment must have at least one Faction keyword in common (e.g. in a matched play game) and when documenting your army's Faction.
  • Units with the GREY KNIGHTS Faction keyword can be included in a ORDO MALLEUS detachment, without preventing that detachment from being an ORDO MALLEUS detachment. Note that this does not prevent ORDO MALLEUS models in that detachment from gaining any detachment abilities, however GREY KNIGHTS units cannot themselves gain any detachment abilities. Similarly, those GREY KNIGHTS units are ignored for any rules that state all units from that Detachment must have at least one Faction keyword in common (e.g. in a matched play game) and when documenting your army's Faction.
  • Units with the ADEPTUS MINISTORUM Faction keyword can be included in ORDO HERETICUS detachment, without preventing that detachment from being an ORDO HERETICUS detachment. Note that this does not prevent INQUISITION models in that detachment from gaining any detachment abilities, however ADEPTUS MINISTORUM units cannot themselves gain any detachment abilities. Similarly, those ADEPTUS MINISTORUM units are ignored for any rules that state all units from that Detachment must have at least one Faction keyword in common (e.g. in a matched play game) and when documenting your army's Faction.
  • Units with the DEATHWATCH Faction keyword can be included in ORDO XENOS detachment, without preventing that detachment from being an ORDO XENOS detachment. Note that this does not prevent ORDO XENOS models in that detachment from gaining any detachment abilities, however DEATHWATCH units cannot themselves gain any detachment abilities. Similarly, those DEATHWATCH units are ignored for any rules that state all units from that Detachment must have at least one Faction keyword in common (e.g. in a matched play game) and when documenting your army's Faction.
  • Your Warlord does not count as an AGENT OF THE IMPERIUM for the purposes of limiting the number of AGENT OF THE IMPERIUM models you may take in your detachment. (This does not supercede the rule that only one Inquisitor may be taken in an Inquisition Detachment, but does mean that you could use an Assassin's AGENT OF THE IMPERIUM rule to add it to your Inquisition detachment.)

This "writing rules" lark isn't all that hard, is it? I haven't managed to get any games of 9th edition 40K in, sadly, so please do let me know if you decide to use my weird house rules, and how you got on?
